Jamal Rollins, Rituals of Commemoration

$200.00

This series of posters raise awareness about the Black lives lost to police killings of Briana Sykes, Kevin Matthews, Patrick Lyoya, James Lowery, and Jamal Rollins. These are among over 1,557 Black lives lost in the United States from 1979 to the present. This work is an outcome of the research for Rituals of Commemoration, which began in 2014. In addition, letterpress printing has led me to explore digital graphics and broader grassroots struggles for justice.

(This work was possible thanks to an Artist Access Grant provided by Miami-Dade County Cultural Department of Cultural Affairs, the support of Diaspora Vibe Cultural Arts Incubator, and master printer Tom Virgin @extravirginpress)

50% of the proceeds from this sale will be donated to Mothers Against Police brutality.

50% will go to the production of Rituals of Commemoration: THEY EXISTED, an ambitious artist bound book that utilizes linoleum and letterpress posters, type and design to center people and their humanity first. This book will bridge the line between a contemporary work of art and historical documentation focusing on the over 109 Black lives lost in Florida at the hands of law enforcement from 1979 to the present.
